UCLA Junior Varsity was victorious against Washington State University on Wednesday in the PACG Quarterfinals. This series win with a 2-0 score allows the Bruins to move into the semifinals.
In game one against WSU, UCLA drafted Swain, Trundle, Azir, Ezreal and Braum. The Cougars drafted Vladimir, Warwick, Xerath, Xayah, and Rakan.
The Bruins gained a massive gold lead in the early-game when Nathan “Rebel Riven” March teleported as Swain to the bot lane after he destroyed top turret with Charlie “cdp98us” Pitteway. March’s teleport netted two kills and allowed UCLA to secure the bottom turret.
The Bruins increased their lead after stomping WSU in a mid-game teamfight. Patrick “Bachit” Le’s Emperor’s Divide corralled 4 members of WSU into the clutches of March’s Swain which allowed UCLA to ace WSU without losing any of their own members.
UCLA secured Baron as it spawned with their massive gold lead and map control and pushed into WSU’s base. After defeating WSU in another teamfight, the Bruins destroyed the nexus at 26 minutes. March and Le ended the game with perfect KDAs, 14 and 10 respectively.
In game two, UCLA’s team composition consisted of Swain, Jax, Orianna, Xayah, and Rakan. WSU drafted Renekton, Trundle, Cassiopeia, Ezreal, and Morgana.
WSU matched UCLA’s early-game pressure by trading kills across the map, making it a relatively even game for 25 minutes. UCLA took the lead after winning a teamfight in the river, where Junwei “OmaeWaMoShinderu” He secured an unofficial quadra kill as Xayah. He’s play allowed the Bruins to take down Baron and attempt to push into WSU’s base.
However, the Bruins struggled to use their Baron effectively. Multiple UCLA members were caught out, forcing the survivors to recall and regroup. Even after securing another Baron, the Bruins were unable to close out the game.
The match was heavily in favor of WSU during the final teamfight of the game until Junwei He turned the fight around by mechanically and mentally outplaying his opponents with 6 items on Xayah. After securing a triple kill, He and Le marched into WSU’s base and ended the series.
As current semifinalists, the Bruins have clearly shown that they are among the stronger teams in the PACG tournament despite criticism questioning the team’s potential. Le said “It feels good to prove people wrong, especially with how clean our first game was”.
UCLA will play their next PACG playoff match against University of Utah on April 18.
