UCLA League of Legends Premiere was defeated in their match against Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) last Saturday. With a current match score of 2-2, the Bruins will not proceed to regional playoffs because of Riot Collegiate Championship rules.

In game one against Cal Poly Pomona, the Bruins’ team composition consisted of Jax, Zac, Ryze, Varus, and Janna. CPP drafted Gnar, Kha’Zix, Vladimir, Caitlyn, and Thresh.

CPP’s Kha’Zix pressured the top side of the map and constantly invaded the jungle of Eddie “Fake Dragon” Honig. With a small gold lead, CPP began to push their advantage by grouping up and securing objectives.

After defeating four members of UCLA in a teamfight, Cal Poly Pomona took Baron uncontested. CPP then pressured the mid inhibitor as Gnar splitpushed in the top lane. They then took the Bruins’ inhibitor, but overstayed, resulting in multiple kills for Austin “BestLucianAfrica” Quon.

When CPP regrouped, the Bruins tried to defend their bot inhibitor but were forced to back off as CPP’s Gnar pressured the nexus turrets. The Bruins then failed to defend the nexus because of their massive gold difference, and CPP ended game one at 29 minutes.

In game two, UCLA Premiere drafted Cho’Gath, Skarner, Taliyah, Jinx, and Braum. CPP’s team composition consisted of Camille, Kha’Zix, Galio, Tristana, and Taric.

Despite an early gold deficit, the Bruins were able to catch up by acing CPP in a midlane teamfight and also took two turrets. Unfortunately for UCLA, Honig was caught out of position while establishing vision control in the river which gave CPP the opportunity to take Baron.

As CPP pushed down the mid lane, Ryan “Rydragon” Ling was taken down by CPP’s Camille in the top lane. With only four members alive, UCLA lost the ensuing teamfight and CPP destroyed their mid and top inhibitors.

While UCLA was able to take down multiple members of CPP in several skirmishes, they ultimately had no answer for Camille’s splitpush. CPP’s Camille was able to take out UCLA’s last inhibitor and both of their nexus turrets as UCLA contested Baron. This enabled CPP to rush the base of UCLA with all five members and they ended the game at 45 minutes.

Though this defeat prevents UCLA Premiere from proceeding to this season’s playoffs, they will continue to play their two remaining matches in Riot’s Collegiate Championship. Curtis “XcOuNtEr sTr1kE” Xuan said he was taking the loss well because he was confident in his team’s ability to comeback strong next season.

“Regarding our loss, even though our team had a chance to get top 8, I don't feel too disappointed since we definitely weren't favored. For next year, my goal is still to get top 8 and (win prize money).”

Following their final match of the Western Conference, the Bruins will then participate in the Teemo Cup Tournament.

UCLA Premiere’s next match will be against United States Air Force Academy on Feb. 17.
