University of Arizona suffered a crushing defeat against UCLA Overwatch A Team on Tuesday in PACG’s Overwatch Tournament.
“When we got into the (game) lobby and checked their ranks, their skill ratings were higher than we expected. They were definitely the best team we have faced so far,” said UCLA’s captain, William “Tsang” Tsang. “Out of all the teams we played so far, they’ve gotten the most points off us but we still pulled through with the 4-0.”
UCLA managed sweep all four maps in the series with their superior teamwork and mechanical skill.
Alexander “sireku” Gonzalez’s Graviton Surges on Zarya were instrumental for UCLA’s victory in the series. On the first map, Eichenwalde, Gonzalez landed a Graviton Surge on 5 members of University of Arizona and Brian “Pip” Sou used Pharah’s Rocket Barrage to wipe them out in seconds. Arizona captured Eichenwalde’s first point, becoming the first team to do so against UCLA, but couldn't push past the bridge in the escort portion of the map against a strong Bruin defense led by Jiang.
Temple of Anubis was the closest map between the two teams. University of Arizona’s decision to pick this map was surprising since its potential for Widowmaker plays is infamous, and UCLA’s Brad “raxa” Jiang has proven that he is capable of winning teamfights decisively on that hero.
However, University of Arizona overcame the pressure exerted by Jiang and almost completed the map with a Graviton Surge from Supermicro, wiping five UCLA members. The Bruins barely managed to regain control of the point after an extended stall fight.
Gonzalez’s Zarya continued to dominate on Nepal and throughout the series rather than switching to D.VA. The team said having Zayra was better for them to build around. Tsang added, “Sireku’s Zarya is insane! Poggers in the chat!”
UCLA’s perfect win record in PACG puts them in place to earn the top spot in the tournament’s South Division. The Bruins have to face Arizona State University next week, who is currently the division favorite for the title.
“We practiced a lot in scrims and such, so we should expect good results,” said Noah “AnotherDax” Malloy confidently. The Bruins go up against likely the powerhouse Overwatch team in the PACG, Arizona State University, on March 13th. You can catch all the action live here at 7:30 PM!
