UCLA Overwatch A Team was victorious against University of Oregon and did not drop a single map in their series last Tuesday. Considering their strong performance the past two weeks, Overwatch A team may be starting a win streak.
Consecutive 4-0 scores against Oregon and Stanford University make UCLA one of the strongest teams in PACG.
Coming into the match, Brian “Pip” Sou was not worried and was confident his team could perform well consistently. “We were mentally prepared since we scouted their skill levels beforehand and we knew we had great players who could outplay them,” he said.
The Bruins did not hold back on Numbani, the first map of the series. UCLA was able to stop several of University of Oregon’s pushes and prevented them from taking the first point.
University of Oregon was able to finally get the upper hand when Chheng, playing Pharah, booped Sou, who had activated Molten Core, off the map. Sou then raced to point as Soldier 76 and contested with the help of William “Tsang” Tsang’s Transcendence. This bought enough time for the rest of the team to turn the fight around.
Tsang said that he decided to contest because he was sure his teammate could recapture the point. “(Sou) was on Soldier. I (on Zenyatta) made the call to retake the point even though it was 2 versus 5 because I had Transcendence to stall the point and I was confident in (Sou’s) ability to out-aim the opponents so that we could stall for the returning members of the team,” added Tsang.
UCLA played a variety of team compositions on the series’ remaining maps, including Volskaya Industries, Lijiang Tower and Route 66.
“With the Mercy meta gone, we free up a hero pick slot. I no longer have to be Mercy 24/7 which allows for flexibility in our team compositions,” said Tsang.
Sou admitted that they were a little more experimental in this match. “We have a very loose play-style, depending on the team we’re playing against but we need to tighten and not get complacent when playing stronger teams,” he said.
Alexander “sireku” Gonzalez took the spotlight on his trademark Zarya. His Graviton Surges on Lijiang Tower and Volskaya Industries stopped Oregon’s pushes and allowed the Bruins to team wipe constantly.
The Bruins will play their strongest opponents in the PACG South Division, Arizona State University, next Tuesday. Overwatch A Team will be challenged in this next match because the combined skill ratings of Arizona’s players match theirs. You can support the Bruins by watching the match live on Twitch on Feb 27.
