The UCLA League of Legends Premiere Team was victorious in their match against Loyola Marymount University last Saturday. The Bruins were able to defeat LMU in two short games because of their strong team coordination and map control.

Due to scheduling conflicts, Mac “BlackChutney” Chandrahasan was substituted out of UCLA A Team’s roster this match. Jason “Reavered” Zhao, the team’s analyst and substitute player, filled the jungle role for this series.

UCLA’s team composition in game one consisted of Jax, Nunu, Orianna, Kog’Maw, and Tahm Kench. LMU drafted Ornn, Jarvan IV, Taliyah, Tristana and Alistar.

Early in the game, the junglers matched their opponent’s movements to deny gank opportunities from each other, but UCLA gained the lead when a fight started in bot lane. Each teams’ jungler and mid laner rushed to help their bot laners, but the Bruins decisively won the skirmish by killing Jarvan early in the fight. UCLA used this advantage to take LMU’s bot turret.

Curtis “XcOuNtEr sTr1kE” Xuan then splitpushed in bot lane as Jax while the rest of UCLA pushed top. This push allowed the Bruins to take down all three top turrets and LMU’s inhibitor. LMU then sent multiple members to chase down Xuan which gave UCLA an opening to secure Baron uncontested.

UCLA then used the Baron buff and the team’s significant gold lead to siege the bottom inhibitor turret. The members of LMU could not defend against the Bruin’s attack and were forced to give up the inhibitor without a fight. UCLA then pressured the nexus turrets and targeted their opponents one-by-one, until no members of LMU remained. UCLA won game one in 23 minutes.

In game two, UCLA drafted Jayce, Maokai, Vladimir, Kog’Maw, and Lulu. LMU’s team composition was Gnar, Jarvan IV, Syndra, Xayah, and Rakan.

Austin “BestLucianAfrica” Quon and Sufhan “sKILLSHOTz FIRED” Chowdhry played aggressively in bot lane, forcing LMU’s Xayah and Rakan to use their summoner spells. With help from their jungler Jason “Reavered” Zhao, UCLA’s bot lane duo was able to effortlessly defeat their opponents, allowing them to take the bot turret.

Bot lane’s massive gold lead allowed UCLA to take down multiple turrets and secure the Rift Herald. LMU unsuccessfully tried to contest these objectives several times, but ultimately lost multiple team members with each attempt. With Rift Herald on their side, UCLA took down two of LMU’s inhibitors and won the game in about 23 minutes.

This victory puts the Bruins’ record at 2-1 in the Western Conference of Riot’s Collegiate Championship. The Bruins have only three more matches left in this phase of the tournament, and their next match will be against Cal Poly Pomona on Feb 10.

The UCLA League of Legends B Team is also succeeding in the CSL Junior Varsity League. B Team currently holds a record of 4-0 and has yet to drop a single game in any of their best of three matches. Their next match will be against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott on Feb. 10.
