Despite their valiant efforts, the UCLA Overwatch A team fell to UCSD’s Defenders of Geisel on Wednesday, 10/04. In dominating fashion, the Defenders of Geisel (DG), the Overwatch team from UCSD’s Triton Gaming, pressured the Bruins constantly and swept two consecutive rounds to win the best of three series convincingly.

Without Sehee “Kabosui” J., Alexander “sireku” G. stepped in to fill the role of off-tank. With sireku on Zarya, Noah “AnotherDax” M. on Winston, Brian “Pip” S. on Pharah, Brad “raxa” J. on McCree, William “Tsang” T. on mercy and captain Harsha “harsha” B. rounding the composition up with a Lucio, the Bruins attempted to gain footing on Nepal Village with a Pharah and Mercy combination. DG answered with an identical team composition. The Bruins however, lost the advantage right from the start as Pip was shot down early in the first engagement by Andy “Schooled” C. on McCree. DG’s Pharah was then able to shut off the doorway to the side from which the Bruins attempted to enter from with constant zoning rockets. With a disadvantage in ultimate abilities, the Bruins were unable to force their way onto the point and lost the first map quickly. Although the Bruins showed flexibility and tried to correct their mistakes by replacing Winston with Reinhardt on Nepal Sanctum, DG’s tank players, Jason “Murky” B. and “Roll5”, shut down their attempts with well-placed Earthshatters and Graviton Surges.

The Bruins picked Hollywood for their next map in true Los Angeles fashion and ran an Orisa and Junkrat on defense. Despite raxa managing to kill 3 members of DG, the Bruins lost the first point due to DG’s tanks having some clutch plays. The Bruins struggled to play as a cohesive unit throughout the rest of the map. There was a visible lack of synergy between the healers and tanks. When healers were caught off position, the tanks were thrown into disarray as well. Every member of UCLA’s team was struggling to keep themselves alive instead of playing as a cohesive team. The Bruins attempted to surprise DG with raxa on Hanzo when they switch over to attack. The plan seemed to work as the team was able to get kills but they were once again shut down by DG’s potent Graviton Surge and Earthshatter combination.

Overall, it was glaringly obvious that UCLA’s Overwatch A team was not as used to playing together as Team DG. While the Bruins may have great individual skills that are on par with DG, their coordination as a team was sorely lacking. Their messy teamplay and mistakes in combining ultimate abilities together to win a fight convincingly ultimately cost them the game. Team DG also played incredibly well this series with multiple clutch plays from their tank and offense characters to shut down the Bruins’ advances completely. With this loss, UCLA’s Overwatch A team now stands with a record of 1 win and 1 loss while Team DG has 2 wins under their belt. Though it was a bitter defeat this time, the Bruins still have ample time to polish their teamplay and come back stronger next game. Be sure to catch UCLA’s Overwatch A team in action again next Wednesday!
