The UCLA Bruins were defeated today by the SJSU Spartans in a 2-0 series. Starting on defense on the map Dorado, the Bruins attempted a Torbjörn composition, with Ryan "CAPTA1N" McNicol being flanked by Sehee "Kabosui" Jeong's Soldier: 76 and Brad "raxa" Jiang's Tracer. Completing the UCLA composition were support heroes Ana and Mercy played by Leon "Pikachief" Chang and Erick "CAPTAINROLF" Corona respectively while Harsha "Harsha" Bandi filled the role of tank with his D.Va.

The match started roughly for UCLA. SJSU adapted to the Torbjörn composition instantly with D.Va, Genji, and Winston. SJSU's Armadyl immediately managed to destroy the Bruin's turret with his Genji, and the Bruins fought an uphill battle as SJSU continued their escort to capture the first point with little effort. Despite Kabosui's Soldier: 76 briefly holding SJSU at the second and third points, San Jose executed a coordinated Lucio ult with D.Va and Genji ultimates to initiate a dive that killed both Bruin healers. San Jose then proceeded to claim the 3rd point of the map despite the efforts of Harsha, raxa, and Kabosui to stall out the overtime.

On the offensive side, UCLA was suppressed immediately by SJSU Aramadyl's Genji and Grandmaster player Ruhvenge's Tracer. Attempting their Torbjörn strategy on offense, CAPTA1N was unable to set up a level 2 turret from the overwhelming pressure SJSU's Winston was putting on them. Raxa would switch to his signature Widowmaker in a desperate attempt to gain momentum for the Bruins. Despite an impressive display of picks and a successful 1v1 with Ruhvenge's Tracer, San Jose State's combination of Lucio and Winston constantly applied pressure to the Bruin backline, resulting in UCLA failing to push past the bridge.

Round 2 did not get easier for the Bruins. Starting on attack on King's Row, UCLA changed up their composition with Harsha switching to Winston and raxa trying his hand at Genji. Kabosui would swap to Tracer while CAPTA1N switched to Lucio to complete the hard dive composition with CAPTAINROLF's Zenyatta and Pikachief's D.Va. SJSU countered with a triple DPS composition, with Ruhvenge once again picking Tracer while Armadyl and Vetag swapped to Hanzo and Mcree respectively. Ultimately, UCLA's poor coordination led to their undoing. Ruhvenge's Tracer expertly dismantled the UCLA back-line, securing himself a quick triple kill on Winston, Lucio and Zenyatta within the first 30 seconds to abate any dive attempts. Unable to execute a clean dive, the Bruins were subsequently dismantled by Armadyl's Hanzo, with Vetag eventually switching to Soldier: 76 to increase the team's DPS. SJSU's SauceyMcGee contributed with his Winston play, racking up key picks on UCLA's back-line and staggering their respawns.

Failing to even touch the first control point on attack, UCLA would pick a composition filled with comfort heroes for their defense. Raxa and Kabosui wielded their main heroes McCree and Soldier: 76, while Pikachief swapped to Reinhardt in order to protect the relatively immobile DPS heroes. The composition was rounded out by CAPTAINROLF's Ana, CAPTA1N's Lucio, and Harsha's D.Va for the standard 2-2-2 composition. San Jose attempted a quick pick with Vetag's Widowmaker early in the map but they were quickly held back on their initial push by Kabosui's quick triple kill on Soldier. However, Ruhvenge's Tracer once again shone through, pressuring the UCLA tanks to retreat behind the statue to cover flanking angles. The pressure allowed Armadyl's Junkrat to reach the high ground above UCLA, and SJSU quickly picked 4 members of the Bruins despite raxa and Kabosui trading kills onto San Jose's Zenyatta and Junkrat. Quickly eviscerating the short-handed Bruins, SJSU would complete the 2-0 sweep with a first point capture.

UCLA Overwatch Premiere returns to action Saturday, July 15th vs UC Riverside. Stay tuned for information and other news.
